The 13th edition of the South Asian Film Festival of Montréal (SAFFM) is being held from 24th May to 2nd June, 2024 in collaboration with La Cinémathèque Québécoise, and the J.A. DeSève Cinema, Concordia University.
A platform for filmmakers of South Asian origin worldwide, SAFFMontréal presents an eclectic choice of inspiring and thought-provoking films pertinent to Canadian democratic values. With most screenings subtitled in both English and French, the festival is vital and engaging. Film enthusiasts can look forward to over 50 movies, many award-winning, from nine countries in a multitude of languages.
With an exciting line-up of fiction features, documentaries and shorts, the films take audiences through the complexities of human emotions, showcased in the festival’s opening and closing films.
Stealing Vows, the festival’s opening film, presents a thrilling narrative of love, loyalty, and larceny. Directed by Bobby Singh Brown, the movie follows a diverse group of wedding vendors as they embark on a daring summer spree, stealing from the opulent homes of their rich clients. Taking viewers on a rollercoaster ride of heists and hijinks, the film challenges traditional norms while championing representation and diversity on screen. Catch the world premiere of the film at La Cinémathèque Québécoise on May 24th at 6 pm. Buy your tickets here!
Conversely, the festival’s closing film, Zarrar Kahn’s feature debut In Flames, offers a poignant exploration of loss and resilience. Following the death of the family patriarch, a mother and daughter must grapple with the harsh realities of their shattered existence as they struggle to keep the family afloat. This art-house masterpiece weaves a story about the strength of the human spirit, while blurring the genre lines between supernatural horror and realistic drama. With its world premiere at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, In Flames has been screened at several festivals including the Toronto International Film Festival, 2023. The film will be screened at La Cinémathèque Québécoise on June 2nd at 6 pm. Buy your tickets here!
