Jury Citation: Listen with your Heart (Meghna Damani, USA), A moving first-person account by a mother Sushama struggling to help her intellectually challenged daughter Aarti build her life working in a Mumbai café. A sensitive and observant cinematic tracking of everyday life and testimony, and a masterful edit that incorporates both characters’ subjectivities alongside Aarti’s inspiring musical talents.

Jury Citation: Rangapravesh. (Kartekeya Saxena, India). An accomplished portrait of a classical dancer and her guru, inspiringly migrating to the streets of the real world. A celebration both of an artform and a pedagogical relationship.

Jury Citation: Gauri (Kavitha Lankesh, India). A brave and uncompromising pulse-taking of the current crisis in Indian politics, focusing on the 2017 political assassination of trailblazing Bengaluru journalist Gauri Lankesh. A “J’accuse” docu-thriller directed and narrated with verve by Gauri’s sister.

Jury Citation: All that breathes (Saunak Sen, India) A beautiful observational documentary about the interrelationship between a metropolis, its caring humans and its distressed birds (and ants, rats, geckos and cows, etc., etc.). This urgent yet tender manifesto on the future of the planet is an Oscar nominee that for once deserves its acclaim!

Jury Citation: Rehana (Abdullah Mohammed Saad, Bangladesh). A tense and brilliantly constructed #MeToo drama set in a neon-lit hospital, with an engaging parallel plot of the heroine getting to really know her daughter.
