NEVER SAY DIE

Never say die is the title I have chosen for my film. Since the work is inspired by the life of my aunt, I have titled it as she would like it to be. My aunt is the sister of my father. This project is an attempt to understand personal experiences and transform them into cinema. As a filmmaker, I find many hues in the fabric of life deeply fascinating. The moving image’s ability to capture the vagaries of life, to me, is not just art; it also represents an artist’s attempt to craft a work that can make a lasting impression. It is my intent and effort to create an impact in this way, and for the world to discover how precisely my film can make a difference. This is what drives me. Using the medium of live-action, animation and stop-motion, I recount the story of my aunt. She has multiple deformities from rheumatoid arthritis. She is immobile. This biographical film draws on her fond memories of parents, teachers, school, college, her dance and her love for poetry, her joys and sorrows and more. It is an attempt to depict a range of episodes from my aunt’s life through my lens. It includes intimate objects that she has used and owned. The work also includes her own narration as a voice-over, reflecting over her own story. Through this film I want to tell a story of hope. I attempt to describe how my aunt fought her life-long condition and still continues to fight the battle every day to emerge as a stable person. Hers a moving story that holds promise for those who have already given up on their similar circumstances. The chronically sick and disabled essentially lead reclusive lives, as friends and relations distance themselves over time. Preoccupied with their own health issues and struggles they cease to be of any interest to the able bodied. Since they do not have plans about their own life, they do not exist in the plan of the able bodied. This is my astonishing finding on the state of society vis-a-vis our challenged fellow beings. It is this that I want to reveal to the world, as I tell the story of my aunt, creating an occasion for one such voice to be heard.
